TIME POETRIES # 1 - SLIDING PULSES
Time Poetries is a cycle of pieces for quartet of blades and small percussion and electronic instruments on a fixed stand, exploring the passage of time in music. As Susanne Langer said, “music makes time audible” (1953, p. 110). These pieces explore music as a supreme art of time, making it audible in various ways and exploring and applying techniques of temporal illusion such as “Risset rhythms” that create illusions of continuous and infinite acceleration or ritardando, Euclidean rhythms, or metric modulation techniques commonly used in the Carnatic music of southern India.
The series, commissioned by the Drumming Percussion Group from Porto, totals approximately 55 minutes and takes listeners on a hypnotic journey, inducing trance states and exploring sounds that evoke psychedelic music. The aim is for the audience to embark on a liberating musical-temporal journey, experiencing various emotional states that arise from different ways of being in time.
